On January 26, 2009, we entered the Year of the Earth Ox in the Chinese astrological system. Happy New Year!
The Ox is the 2nd animal in the 12-year cycle. It indicates a time to focus on construction and building - creating a foundation for future years. The Ox is no risk-taker, so this is a time to pause before making big decisions, and to go toward conservation rather than excess.
The characteristics of those born in the Ox year are a calm personality, persistence, dependability, honesty and patience. On the downside, they can be stubborn, proud and grumpy. In general they are very patient and hard-working. When obstructed, they can be belligerent and make formidable adversaries. If you were born in 1937,1949, 1961, 1973, 1984 or 1997; you were born in the Year of the Ox.
Within the Chinese system, we recognize the Five Elements as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each year there is an interplay of the Five Elements that sets the stage for movements that will be supported or hindered during the year ahead. Some of the associations of the elements include: Wood the energy of new growth and vision; Fire the energy of passion and transformation; Earth the energy of stability and comfort; Metal the energy of precision and justice; Water the energy of wisdom and death.
This year we have double-Earth during the Ox year, producing a more stable situation than the interplay of Earth and Water we experienced in the Year of the Rat. Earth upon earth implies a time of harmony and improved opportunities for peace. It does however point to the possibility of earthquakes and landslides. This is a good reminder for those of us in southern California to make sure we have a home preparedness earthquake kit, as well as some emergency supplies in our offices and cars.
While last year was a time for new beginnings, making changes and a time to exercise creativity; this year is a time to focus on stability. Given the recent shifts in the economy - I’m sure we are all in favor of stability as a theme! Fortunately for us, our new leader, President Obama was born in the year of the Ox. His embodiment of the best of what the Ox has to offer will serve to guide us all forward in harmony with the energy of this year.
Wishing you and your family many blessings in this Year of the Ox,
Keiko Cronin, L.Ac.
