| January 2009 – CFL Newsletter - Green! 01-01-2009 Happy New Year! As we begin each year, we like to offer some “green tips” to help each of us reduce our impact on the environment. Many of these tips have health benefits for you and your family, beyond the benefits they offer to the earth. We wish you and your family the best in 2009.
Green tips:
• Carpool when possible or ride public transportation. Walk instead of driving and you benefit your health and mother nature.
• Shop local and organic for your groceries. Take advantage of the many Farmer’s Markets in Los Angeles: www.farmernet.com/events/cfms. Supporting local farmer’s fosters community, which reduces demand for oil to ship and truck food..
• Carry reusable grocery bags with you for all your shopping excursions.
• If you make purchases in bulk at the grocery store, bring your own reusable containers.
• Pack your children’s lunches in reusable containers and include a cloth napkin.
• Use cloth napkins rather than paper at home.
• Carry a handkerchief rather than tissues.
• When eating out, and you typically can’t finish a meal, consider splitting them with your friends and family. This is a way to reduce waste that results from large restaurant portions. If you are watching your weight, this will help reduce your portions. If you frequently have leftovers when eating out – carry reusable containers with you.
• Take shorter showers. Consider setting a timer and gradually reducing your time – this works great with kids. Use a chlorine filter in the shower and bath. We absorb chlorine through our skin while bathing.
• Drinking water. Carry a reusable stainless steel or glass bottle that you refill using your home water filter. Filtering water at home produces a higher quality of clean water than bottled, as bottled water standards aren’t as high as most of us think. You will also dramatically cut down on the manufacture and transport of plastic water bottles and save money!
• Cook with cast-iron or stainless steel cookware rather than aluminum.
• Use earth-friendly products to clean your home and your body.
• Turn off the water when you brush your teeth.
• When doing dishes by hand, reduce running water and use a bowl or dish tub to wash and rinse the dishes.
• Run the dishwasher only when full.
• Do laundry less frequently and only when you have a full load.
• Use lights only when needed. Turn off lights when you leave a room.
• Play board games with your family rather than watching TV.
