| YEAR OF THE EARTH RAT - A NEW CYCLE BEGINS By Keiko Cronin, L.Ac. 02-01-2008 On February 7, 2008 we enter the Year of the Earth Rat in the Chinese astrological system. As the newest member of the Centre for Life team, this new year and new cycle strikes a chord for me, and provides me with an opportunity to share some information with you and to introduce myself.
Chinese astrology follows the lunar cycles, which is why it does not correspond with the Gregorian calendar used in the West. For those of us in California - the new year begins a little bit earlier, as the new moon will be on Wednesday, February 6 at 7:44pm.
In the days leading up to Chinese New Year, it is customary to thoroughly clean one’s house and to give away items that one can no longer use. Unused items create a stagnation of energy, and it is important to clear this out to make way for new energy and movement in one’s life. It is also a time to pay off all debts, freeing up the flow of financial energy.
In this system, the Rat is the first of the 12-animal signs that characterize the general energy of each year. We are currently finishing out the Year of the Fire Pig. This transition is particularly interesting because we are at the end of a 12-year cycle. The Pig year represented a time to bring things to completion. A time to finish projects that were in process, to transition out of careers or relationships or behaviors that would not serve us well moving forward in our life’s cycle.
The Rat year represents a new beginning. This is a time to embark upon new projects, to unleash creative energies and to take advantage of new opportunities. The Earth character of this year brings a solid, stable quality to the Rat energy. This year will feel less turbulent on the surface than last year. There is some tension that underlies this year in a struggle between Earth and Water. Struggles, both personal and global, tend to take place behind-the-scenes and to be less obvious than last year.
The Rat is a very popular animal in China and has much more positive connotations than it carries in the West. Rat people are considered leaders, pioneers and innovators. They are charming, intelligent, quick to solve problems and hard-working at their best. They can also be tricky, manipulative, and aggressive competitors. The attributes of Rat people will also be part of the character of this coming Rat year. If you were born in 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960 or 1948, you were born in the Year of the Rat.
May this year be one of good health and prosperity for you and your families!

About my practice:
For starters, I am thrilled to be part of the team at Centre for Life. As this Rat Year begins, I look forward to developing a new clientele at the Centre. My work encompasses several healing modalities including Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Acupressure, Plant Spirit Medicine, Micro-current Facial Rejuvenation and Cosmetic Acupuncture.
Since many of you are familiar with the benefits of acupuncture and herbal medicine, I thought I would share a few words about the modalities I utilize that may be less well-known.
Plant Spirit Medicine is a hands-on healing system that incorporates the diagnostics of the Chinese Five Element model with energetic healing to balance the organs and meridians. It is a needle-less treatment that is wonderful for supporting change and restoring balance at the emotional and spiritual level, as well as supporting physical healing.
Both Micro-current Facial Rejuvenation and Cosmetic Acupuncture are ways to improve skin and muscle tone, lessen wrinkles and provide a healthier, more youthful appearance without the use of surgery or chemicals. Constitutional body acupuncture is provided in conjunction with these treatments to support overall health and vitality.
For those interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine - I utilize acupuncture, custom herbal formulas, acupressure and dietary counseling to address a wide range of health concerns that I have encountered in my years of practice.
During the month of February, I will offer a 20% discount to new patients on their first visit. To schedule an appointment,
